GATC Manufacturing Facility

About Us

Who We Are
At The Great American Train Company, we are passionate about trains. We are true railroad enthusiasts with a sincere interest in sharing this wonderful hobby with as many new families as possible. Many of us even have our own 1.5 " scale railroads installed at our own homes.

GATC is headquartered in Plymouth, Minnesota, USA at our Plymouth Works facility. We are proud that our products are designed and built in the USA. Our people truly care about producing high-quality products that can be enjoyed by a wide range of people.

Every product we sell has been professionally designed and rigorously tested for durability, reliability and safety. You can feel confident your investment in our products will give you many years of enjoyment.

How We Started
Although, we're a fairly new company, The Great American Train Company has actually been in the making for a long time.

Senior management at our company has been in the high-tech electronics business for over 30 years. During that time, we've developed an advanced level of expertise in all aspects of product design, engineering and manufacturing. At GATC, we've taken that wealth of experience and applied it to the backyard train hobby.

Our products are designed and built to a level of quality, reliability and durability that is simply unmatched. The first time you see one of our products up close and in-person, you'll know exactly what we mean. Quite frankly, there is no finer backyard or club train available.

The Products We Sell
We believe the products we build must have lasting value. That's why every GATC locomotive, riding car, rolling stock and accessory has been professionally engineered, tested and re-tested for performance, durability and reliability.

Our highly-talented team of engineers utilizes the latest equipment and software during the design process. Then, skilled craftspeople at our Plymouth Works facility in Minnesota assemble each product with modern production and quality-control methods.

All of our products are modular in design. This means if you need to replace a spare part or two in the coming years, you can easily install them on-site. That's a lot more convenient than sending in a 190-pound locomotive for service.

Standards We Maintain
Yes, we are passionate about trains. But we're also passionate about the quality and reliability of the products we produce. For example,

  • Before the GATC Pioneer Mogul Locomotive was released into production, it ran for more than 500 hours on our indoor and outdoor test tracks in Minnesota.

  • Before our smoke and steam generator was offered as a standard feature on all GATC locomotives, it was tested with more than 150 gallons of Smoke and Steam Fluid.

These are the lengths we go to make sure every GATC product you purchase does what it is supposed to do – provide you and your family with years of enjoyment.

People and Culture
We're a dedicated group of railroad enthusiasts who started this business as an outgrowth of our own 1.5" scale railroad hobby. We've turned it into a worldwide company with facilities in Plymouth, Minnesota (for North and South America and Asia/Pacific Sales) and Wiesbaden, Germany (for Europe, Scandinavia, Middle East and Africa Sales).

It is our mission to provide professionally-engineered and reliable riding trains for both the backyard and light commercial markets and to support them with knowledgeable and friendly people.

From the person who answers the phone to the mechanical and electrical engineers who design the products, we take pride in what we do for our customers, ourselves and each other. That's what attracts people to our company and our culture and encourages them to stay. If you'd like to know more about working at GATC, check out our employment opportunities.

Our Minnesota Heritage
The Great American Train Company is a growing, Minnesota-based company founded by train enthusiasts. We are proud to offer high-quality, made-in-America products that enhance your time spent with family and friends.

We strive to embrace Midwestern values in all that we do while honoring the long history and traditions of the early American railroads. We have a lot to live up to, since James J. Hill, founder of the Great Northern Railroad, had his headquarters right here in St. Paul, Minnesota. And as the "Land of 10,000 Lakes," there are a lot of acreage homes and vacation properties that really need their own backyard trains.

Our Future
One of the best things about the backyard train hobby is all of us can add track, structures, signs, lights, tunnels, landscaping and more almost forever. That's why you'll continously see new products appearing on the GATC web site. Check back often!

We want to provide you with the best backyard trains and accessory products you can find anywhere. If you have an idea for a product you'd like to see us offer, please write to us at sales@greatamericantrain.com. We'd love to hear from you!
